Also, we are well aware of the main concerns when seeking legal advice, so we shall try to answer the most common questions:

How much does a startup lawyer cost?

An average range of legal costs for a startup at the angel stage can sit anywhere between US$5,000 to US$20,000.  The most common fee for lawyers is an hourly fee; attorneys regularly charge from $150 to $750 an hour (this number can change, depending on the firm, location and the lawyer's experience).

Do startups (really) need lawyers?

There are few occasions when a startup company absolutely must engage a lawyer (e.g., funding round, firing an employee, embezzlement of company funds, etc.).  However, startups do need legal support; but startups don't necessarily need to engage lawyers for all the legal support they need (i.e., online legal form providers).

What does a startup lawyer (actually) do?

They can help navigating the many forms and requirements of legal documents, like incorporation documents, that are involved, and provide assistance before you face a costly lawsuit or troubling legal situation.

The 5 Mayor Startup Legal Issues:

1. Wrong entity incorporation.

2. IP & domain name ownership (falling in the wrong hands).

3. Not setting up vesting (for founders and early employees).

4. Not complying with security laws (when raising money).

5. Not doing due diligence (to your investors).
